genre crossover - 4/10/18

welcome back to another riveting opinion piece from yours truly (a day late) (sorry bois)

today i wanted to tackle the topic of genre crossovers. This isn’t a new concept by any means, artists have been delving into other genres for decades now...but most of the time it’s situations where a country artist and an indie artist mashup, or a pop artist singing along to an EDM beat, where their original genres weren’t that far off to begin with. Lately, however, i’ve been noticing a lot of artists from genres that aren’t that similar coming together for tracks, such as Carrie Underwood’s new song with Ludacris, The Champion

Now, i don’t typically like country music, i respect it as a genre but other than that I’m not really a huge fan of it. My mom and sister are, so i’m around it more than I would prefer. Buuuuut sometimes country artists are on songs that are actually not terrible (and maybe even really good)

The song specifically that I had in mind was Let Me Go by Hailee Steinfeld, Alesso, Watt, and Florida Georgia Line…. FGL have been making more and more of an appearance in charting pop music and i don’t know how i feel about it. In an article that billboard put out (linked here) they talk about how FGL’s song with Bebe Rexha is #2 currently on the charts and it’s the “first country act to lead the list in eight years”

Eight years!!!! My country-hating self is happy about that statistic, however, the industry-lover in me is very much so interested in it. Obviously, there are periods of time where certain genres top the charts. For a while it was rock music, and now it’s mostly R&B/rap, but there has almost never been a time that country has topped the charts. Will there ever be a time? Or is it that niche of a genre that it will never be constant country hits on the top of the charts? There was even a small period of time when show-tunes had a recurring spot on the top when Glee was around. I personally don’t see country having a spotlight anytime soon (and most of me hopes it stays that way) but who knows  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If you have an opinion on this, feel free to comment! If not you can, instead, watch this for some nice tuesday night entertainment
